Ukrainian Forces Hit Russian Fuel Plant Using British Storm Shadow Cruise Missiles.
In a significant escalation, Ukrainian forces have employed British-made Storm Shadow missiles to target and hit a key Russian oil refinery. The attack occurred on Thursday, as stated by the country's military command.
Attack Particulars and Strategic Impact
The targeted facility, the Novoshakhtinsk oil plant, was said to be hit, with "numerous explosions" recorded at the location. This represents another instance where Ukraine has utilized these powerful British-supplied missiles to hit objectives on Russian territory.
Ukrainian officials emphasized that the Novoshakhtinsk facility serves as one of the primary providers of petrol products in southern Russia and is actively engaged in supplying the military of the Russian Federation.
Diplomatic Developments on the Conflict
In a related development, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Thursday that he held productive discussions with envoys of ex-President Donald Trump, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The conversation focused on potential pathways to end the war.
“We had a really good conversation: numerous specifics, good ideas, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy wrote on a social media platform. “There are some fresh concepts on how to bring real peace closer, and it concerns approaches, meetings, and, certainly, the timeline.”
Legal Crackdown Within Russia
Meanwhile, in a domestic matter, a Russian court has convicted a pro-war activist and opponent of Vladimir Putin on charges of justifying terrorism. Sergei Udaltsov, head of the Left Front movement, was given to six years in prison.
This case are said to be based on an online post Udaltsov shared backing another group of activists accused of forming a terrorist group. Udaltsov has denied the charges as politically motivated and, following the verdict, reportedly announced to begin a hunger strike in protest.
International Detainee Case
The Kremlin indicated it is engaged with French authorities regarding the case of Laurent Vinatier, a French political scholar serving a prison term in Russia and allegedly facing additional accusations of spying.
An official said that Russia has made an offer to France regarding Vinatier, and now “it is in France’s court.” President Emmanuel Macron’s office confirmed he is closely following the situation, with all state resources mobilised to offer assistance and push for his liberation at the earliest opportunity.
Symbolic Reconstruction in Mariupol
The Mariupol Drama Theatre, which was leveled in a 2022 Russian airstrike while hundreds of civilians sought refuge in its cellar, is set to open its doors again. Russian occupation authorities have heralded the reconstruction as a sign of renewal.
However, previous staff from the theatre have called the reopening as “dancing on bones.” The reconstruction is part of a wider Kremlin effort to showcase its administration in seized territories, a process accompanied by the arrest or exile of dissenting voices and property seizures from local residents.
The theatre is due to reopen by the month's end with a show of a Russian fairytale, having been rebuilt almost from scratch over the last 24 months.
