The Mayor-Elect affirms his intention to reside in historic Gracie Mansion
New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate during his campaign.
A Historic Residence
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the mayoral home for the majority of New York City mayors from the post-war period.
But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central platform, did not confirm this decision immediately after his victory in November.
"My choice was based on keeping my family safe and the imperative to dedicating all of my focus on implementing the agenda for affordability the city's residents elected me on," Mamdani said in a statement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community renowned for its vibrant cultural enclaves and international dining.
"To Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the best of New York City," he noted.
"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, it will continue to reside within me and my work," he added.
A Contentious Issue
During his campaign, Mamdani linked his central policy – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.
However his critics, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing although he is from a famous family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his three terms, which concluded in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a space for civic gatherings, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.
A Grand New Home
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience surroundings very different than his modest Astoria home.
Adorned in pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.
Inside, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's historical period.
The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much landlords can raise the rent each year.
Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the housing expenses rises faster than the average income.
It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
