Martínez Double Ensures Inter Milan on Tail of Leaders

Inter striker Lautaro Martínez netted a second-half double to secure his team a 2-0 win at Pisa, keeping the visitors very much engaged in the Italian league title race despite a somewhat shaky performance.

League Table Update

Led by Cristian Chivu, Inter currently sit third in the table with 27 points total, tied with second-placed Roma and just one point behind leaders Milan. Meanwhile, Pisa hold the third bottom position with 10 points.

Game Recap

Inter arrived in Tuscany aiming to get back on track after suffering a derby defeat by Milan last weekend, followed by a European loss at Atlético Madrid. However, they were made to battle all the way by promoted Pisa. The home team created plenty of chances, but a clinical Inter broke the deadlock in the 69th minute mark when Argentine Martínez smacked a first-time shot into the roof of the net. The attacker then tapped in from close range seven minutes from time.

Inter’s ability to score even with pressure proved crucial in earning the victory.

Additional Continental Action

In Spain, Real Sociedad mounted a dramatic comeback from 2-0 down to level at home against Villarreal, only to lose to a goal five minutes into stoppage time. The visitors’ goals came from Ayoze Pérez shortly after the 30-minute mark and Alberto Moleiro in the 57th minute, but Carlos Soler quickly reduced the deficit and Ander Barrenetxea equalised three minutes from time. Yet, Moleiro had the last word late in stoppage time.

In the late Spanish fixture, Real Madrid journey to Girona requiring a win to go back to the top above Barcelona, who recorded a 3-1 triumph over Alavés on Saturday.
