Vicky McClure will return their roles in the popular police drama

The beloved crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th season, announced by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-part series created by the show's creator starts production in Belfast in the coming months, according to the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."

The last season concluded in 2021 with a finale that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but official word only arrived this week.

New Challenges for The Team

The seventh season will open with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to become a offender.

However, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had so many followers watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new season."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston described appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Not only the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those mercurial twists and turns."

Show History

The drama premiered in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Stephen Graham.

The BBC has not yet announced exactly the new season will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six brought the long-running storyline about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the time there were no plans for further series.

Nevertheless, the network announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
