An Tale of Unexpected Generosity: The Time a University Student Let Me Stay on Her Dormitory Floor

Back in the year 2006, I traveled to Canberra for a medical school interview. I figured to book lodging after getting there, but upon reaching the city, a large conference was happening and all the backpackers hostels and cheap hotels were completely sold out.

Coming from Singapore, I considered maybe I could spend the night at the airport – but quickly found the local airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, is not open 24 hours. Unsure of what my next move should be and growing worried, I boarded a bus into town and found myself drifting near a gaming venue, thinking I could pass the night somewhere operating all night. That wouldn’t put me in the best shape for nailing an interview the following day, yet, as a broke student, I couldn’t afford.

We could all use more individuals who show such kindness.

I must have looked out of place because a young woman noticed me walking aimlessly through the city center and wondered whether I needed help. I recounted my predicament and right away she said I could crash on the floor of her dormitory at ANU – a perfect solution, given that my my interview was scheduled for the next day. She went further by offering a meal: one stuffed baguettes she brought back her evening job. I was able to use a hot shower and a protected spot and secure for the evening.

With hindsight, it’s clear to me the enormous leap of faith she undertook as a woman letting a male stranger she’d just met stay in her room. At that time I was in a bubble of male privilege and did not consider about things like that. Now, as a father, it astounds me she did that – but still deeply appreciative.

I never did study at that university, and I never saw her again, but I’ve never forgotten her amazing act of kindness. It is my wish karma has repaid her good deed many times over. Our society requires more individuals who show such kindness.
